Daniel Jones’ Farewell From The Giants: Lessons In Gratitude And Grace For Thanksgiving

Just in time for Thanksgiving, a recently released NFL quarterback offers how important it is to always show gratitude, even when things don’t work out.

Daniel Jones’ departure from the New York Giants is a masterclass in handling non-voluntary career transitions with dignity and grace, offering valuable lessons for anyone navigating professional changes. Despite his on-field struggles and an early exit from a role many dream of, Jones took the high road, expressing gratitude and focusing on relationships as he and the Giants “mutually decided to part ways.”

“The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,” Jones told the media before thanking the ownership for the chance. “I am extremely grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the chance to play here. The Giants are truly a first-class organization and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who have built it and have carried on its traditions.” Jones also went out of his way to thank his teammates and even the fans who had been increasingly critical of him during his time in New York.

After Jones left the building, John Mara, the president and owner of the Giants, praised his franchise’s former quarterback. “Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first-class in every way,” Mara told ESPN. “His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that.”

All of us can learn a great deal from the classy way Jones left New York and apply those lessons as we continue to develop in our careers. Amy Blaschka, an expert on career growth and a fellow Forbes contributor, found that how we say goodbye to one job impacts how we say hello to another. She offered several suggestions for that kind of transition, including showing gratitude, helping make the change as seamless as possible, reflecting on what you have learned from your old job, prioritizing relationships, and remaining curious about your career. Based on how he handled things with the Giants, Jones is familiar with Blaschka’s playbook.

“Before you depart your current role, make an effort to thank everyone you’ve worked with who has helped, championed, and collaborated with you during your stint,” Blaschka recommended. “Taking the time to express your gratitude to your co-workers, clients, and partners leaves an imprint of your kindness behind.” Jones followed that advice perfectly.

Blaschka also stressed how important relationships are when you make a job change. “Jobs are temporary, but relationships can last a lifetime,” she wrote. “And the longer you work, the smaller your professional world gets, so it’s essential to prioritize your relationships. Do your part to stay connected with old co-workers, provide them with your new contact information, offer to help answer any questions after you depart, and leave on good terms.”

Jones followed that advice perfectly, as even an old teammate turned rival went out of his way to wish him well. Saquon Barkley, a star running back for the Philadelphia Eagles who played with Jones on the Giants, only had “great things to say about” his former teammate.

“You’re not going to find anybody that can say negative things about him,” Barkley told Sports Illustrated. “Hopefully, wherever he ends up next, they’re going to get a guy to come in and work. It didn’t work for me [with the Giants], and I’m doing well over here [in Philadelphia]. Hopefully, he can find the same fresh start and success.”

Jones cleared waivers on Monday, and by that afternoon, there was already plenty of buzz linking him to other NFL teams with reports that at least ten franchises were interested in signing the new free agent. While he might never live up to draft day expectations, Jones looks like he will be in the NFL for the foreseeable future—thanks in no small part to his graceful exit from the Giants.

For professionals in any field, Jones’ story illustrates that challenges and setbacks don’t have to define you. Instead, how you respond—by showing gratitude, reflecting on your growth, and nurturing relationships—can open doors to new opportunities. As Jones prepares for his next chapter, his actions showed us all the importance of leaving on good terms and always being grateful for all of our opportunities.
