Long before he became Europe’s top badminton player and the founder of Summize—an AI-powered platform revolutionizing contract management—Tom Dunlop learned a powerful lesson from his father: you can control the uncontrollable through preparation.

“The difference at the top level—the elite top percent—is how you control the uncontrollables,” Dunlop shared. “It’s the mentality and how you react.”

In business, much like in sports, there’s always someone bigger, faster, or better-funded. But standing still isn’t an option.

“If there’s always someone better or bigger than you, you can’t just accept it—you have to keep innovating,” he said. “That’s why part of our strategy is to never stay still. We embrace the underdog mentality and use it to fuel our growth.”

For business leaders, Dunlop’s message is clear: preparation and resilience separate the good from the great. In this episode, he shares key insights, including:

  • Use customer feedback wisely. While valuable, businesses should stay focused on their vision rather than trying to please everyone.

“The difference between being part of the pack and being number one is how you control the uncontrollables,” he said. “In badminton, you’re already thinking three or four shots ahead. It’s the same in business—you must anticipate moves, market shifts, and unexpected challenges.”
